AUSTIN, TX — Jerry Patterson, Chairman of the Texas Veterans Land Board, will join veterans at El Paso’s Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, to celebrate five years of serving those who have served our nation.
“The El Paso veterans’ community has embraced this home,” Patterson said. “We are proud to serve them. I’d like to invite everyone to come out and just take a look around this place — Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans home really is where honor lives.”
The festivities begin at 10 a.m. Thursday with a patriotic prelude by the 62nd U.S. Army Band.
As a state senator, Patterson authored the legislation that created the Texas State Veterans Home Program.
The unique blending of federal and state benefits makes the home a bargain for eligible veterans. Because the VA subsidizes a significant portion of a veteran’s cost to stay in a Texas State Veterans Home, the daily out-of-pocket rates are well below market average and include the cost of medications. A veteran currently pays $52-$63 a day for a semi-private room in a Texas State Veterans Home. The average cost for a semi-private room in a private Texas nursing home is about $109 a day, which often does not include the cost of medications.
And while costs at private nursing homes continue to skyrocket, the costs to veterans at the Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home in El Paso have held steady.
Like all Veterans Land Board programs, Texas State Veterans Homes are self-supporting and cost Texas taxpayers virtually nothing.
