AUSTIN, TX — Residents from nursing homes and assisted living centers all around El Paso will converge on the Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, for the Third Annual Wii Bowling Tournament.
Residents from 13 area facilities are expected to join Texas veterans in a fun-filled virtual bowling competition with the Nintendo Wii.
"It's great to see El Paso's Texas State Veterans Home hosting such a fun and healthy event for seniors from all over the El Paso area," said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, Chairman of the Texas Veterans Land Board. "This is the kind of thing that makes our veterans homes such lively gathering places."
The event is organized by the Rio Grande Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging's Ombudsman Program. All El Paso-area nursing homes and assisted living facilities are invited to compete.
As a state senator, Patterson authored the legislation that created the Texas State Veterans Home Program. The unique blending of federal and state benefits makes the home a bargain for eligible veterans.
El Paso's Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home is one of seven statewide. Each home provides skilled long-term nursing care, comprehensive rehabilitation programs, special diets, recreational activities, social services, a library, and a certified, secured Alzheimer's unit with its own secured outdoor courtyard.
