Major announcement Thursday on Christmas Mountains

AUSTIN — Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson will make a major announcement about the Christmas Mountains at a 9 a.m. press conference Thursday, Sept. 15.

The press conference will be on the ninth floor of the Stephen F. Austin Building, at 17th and North Congress Avenue.

The Christmas Mountains are a 9,269-acre tract of land in Brewster County, just north of Big Bend National Park.  In 1991, the Texas General Land Office agreed to accept this tract as a donation from the Richard King Mellon Foundation into the Permanent School Fund. The donated property came with a strict conservation easement held by The Conservation Fund that insured long term conservation goals on the property.

Recently, Patterson and the National Park Service agreed to a permanent public easement on the land's shared southern border with Big Bend National Park, ensuring public access to the rugged terrain.

The press conference will be webcast at: http://www.glo.texas.gov/glo_news/webcasts/index.html
