EL PASO — Veterans, their families and staff at the Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home will be treated to a free cookout and concert on Labor Day.
The invitation-only celebration will kick off at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2. Carl Robinson, District Four city representative, is sponsoring the event. Navy veteran Antonio Salcido will provide live music for the entertainment. Special guests include Col. Brant V. Dayley, Garrison Commander at Fort Bliss.
Texas State Veterans Homes are made possible through a unique partnership between the VLB and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Each home provides skilled long-term nursing care, comprehensive rehabilitation programs, special diets, recreational activities, social services, a library, and a certified, secured Alzheimer’s unit with its own secured outdoor courtyard.
Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson dedicated the home in 2005, which hosts around 160 veterans, spouses, and Gold Star parents. The home is named after Medal of Honor recipient, Marine Staff Sgt. Ambrosio Guillen, who died fighting in the Korean War.
