State unveils plan to rebuild Bastrop homes

AUSTIN — The Texas General Land Office is asking for public comment on its plan to spend about $20 million to rebuild homes destroyed in last fall's Bastrop area wildfires.
A public hearing will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 30 at the Bastrop County Commissioners' Court, 804 Pecan Street, Bastrop. The hearing will be a chance to see and comment on the Land Office's State Action Plan to use U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding available for the disaster. The money is expected to help rebuild between 150 and 200 homes.
When available, the State Action Plan may be reviewed online at http://www.glo.texas.gov/GLO/disaster-recovery/wildfires/index.html .
Last fall's wildfires in the Bastrop area were the most destructive in Texas history. The catastrophic fires destroyed 3,017 homes, charred more than 34,000 acres and killed two people.
Once the State Action Plan is approved by HUD, fire victims may apply online at http://www.glo.texas.gov/GLO/disaster-recovery/wildfires/index.html or by calling the Land Office's Disaster Recovery Hotline at 866-206-1084.
The Land Office is the lead state agency managing disaster recovery grants through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, giving communities a single point of contact, cutting bureaucratic red tape and reducing administrative costs.
