MEDIA ADVISORY — Jun 13, 2014

BONHAM, Texas — A couple of stars have been added since several local veterans signed up to fight for Old Glory.

A Flag Day ceremony is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14, in the dining room of the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home, 1300 Seven Oaks Road, in Bonham.

Members of the American Legion Post 231 will discuss the history of the U.S. flag during the ceremony. Following the event, members of the American Legion will visit with the residents – all of whom gave of themselves to defend our flag and what it represents. There is no cost to attend the event, which is open to the public.

Flag Day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the U.S. flag on June 14, 1777 – which is also the birthday of the Army. The first official American flag had a constellation of 13 stars representing each of the newly freed colonies.

President Woodrow Wilson designated Flag Day an official federal holiday in 1916, when the flag contained 48 stars shortly after the admission of Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona. This was a year after the birth of the Cosper home’s oldest veteran, who was born in 1915.

“It’s a day to honor those of us who protected the flag and fought for freedom of our country,” said Jack Burk, a World War II veteran and resident of the home, who remembers fighting under a 48-star flag.

The Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home provides first-class long-term care for up to 160 residents, including up to 32 Alzheimer’s residents in a separate, secured unit. Created and operated exclusively for Texas veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents, the Clyde W. Cosper Home offers superior care for our heroes. For more information contact the Clyde W.
