History of the
Amarillo was chosen by the VLB as the site for the seventh Texas State Veterans Home in 2003. The home is named after two Panhandle heroes: former VLB member and longtime veterans advocate Mike Ussery and Medal of Honor recipient Marine PFC Charles Howard Roan. Roan died on Pelelieu when he threw himself on a grenade to save his fellow Marines. Ussery was a member of the Veterans Land Board and a longtime veterans advocate instrumental in getting a Veterans Home for Amarillo. He died just before the groundbreaking for the home.
