Cascade Park Coastal Wetlands Enhancement and Education

Summary

The Cameron County Drainage Distrist #1 will transform the 45-acre tract behind its offices into a thematic public park to educate the public on water related issues. The District will use Low Impact Development (LID) technology and best management practices to reduce pollutant loading, and enhance public awareness and understanding of the non-point source pollution. A wetland detention pond has been designed to improve public safety and stormwater management but also to function as a wetland for aquatic and riparian species habitat, for ecotourism, for biological filtration of storm water runoff, water quality and quantity, native wildlife and vegetation, and flood hazard mitigation. The park design includes ADA accessible trails and viewing piers for public access, and locations for educational signage.
