General Land Office Wraps Up Calhoun County Vessel Turn-In Program

The Texas General Land Office’s (GLO) Oil Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) team wrapped up its spring Vessel Turn-In Program (VTIP) which was held May 18-20. During the event, the GLO, Calhoun County and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department together collected 10 vessels measuring over 197 linear feet.  A derelict vessel is turned at the Calhoun County VTIP held last week  Removing abandoned vessels from coastal waters comes at a considerable expense—around $200-300 per foot. WWII Veteran Requests 100 Cards for His 100th Birthday

Today, Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairman George P. Bush challenged Texans to show their utmost appreciation for World War II Veteran, Army Sgt. Everett Alexander, who turns 100 on May 10th. Sgt. Alexander—a resident of the Richard A. Anderson Texas State Veterans Home (TSVH) in Houston—has requested to receive at least 100 cards for this momentous occasion. Sgt. Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home Awarded $535,000 VA Grant

Today, Texas Veteran Land Board (VLB) Chairman George P. Bush announced that the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has awarded the VLB a grant totaling $535,135 for the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home (TSVH) in McAllen. The grant money will be used to update the home’s existing HVAC system. “As part of our mission to serve Texas Veterans with the highest standards of care, we are committed to advocating for federal funding opportunities that provide the critical resources required to modernize our facilities,” said VLB Chairman Bush. Volunteers Remove Over 50,000 Pounds of Trash from Texas Coast

This past weekend, more than 4,000 volunteers gathered at 23 sites along the Texas coastline to participate in the 2022 Adopt-A-Beach Spring Cleanup. A total of 51,087 pounds of trash was removed from the Texas coast during the event which took place on Saturday, April 9. Read More


Commissioner Bush Announces 2022 “Treasures of the Coast” Art Contest Winner

Today, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush announced Celina Gao of Katy as the overall winner of the 2022 Annual Adopt-A-Beach “Treasures of the Coast” art contest. VLB Chairman Bush Announces $450,000 for Structural Improvements to Three Texas State Veteran Homes

Today, Veteran Land Board (VLB) Chairman George P. Bush announced that the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has awarded the VLB a grant totaling $453,335.50 to three Texas State Veterans Homes (TSVH). The grant money will be used to replace the roofing at the Ambrosio Guillen TSVH in El Paso and the Alfredo Gonzalez TSVH in McAllen. Additionally, the grant will be used to replace the flooring at the Ussery-Roan TSVH in Amarillo. Read More


HUD approved GLO’s Mitigation Action Plan granting $750 million directly to Harris County and $488 million for the Houston-Galveston Area Council for regional projects

Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approved the Texas General Land Office’s (GLO) amended plan for Community Development Block Grant Mitigation (CDBG-MIT), which allocates $750 million in funding for Harris County and an additional $488 million to the Houston-Galveston Area Council for additional mitigation projects in the region.“Ensuring Texans receive disaster recovery and mitigation funding in a timely manner to recover from Hurricane Harvey has always been my top priority,” said Commissioner Bush.
