World War II Veteran Requests 100 Cards for His 100th Birthday

Today,  Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D. called on the Big Spring community to show support for one of our courageous Veterans, World War II Veteran U.S. Army Corporal (CPL) Carl Reid, who turns 100 on June 15th. CPL Reid— a resident at the Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home (TSVH) in Big Spring— has requested at least 100 birthday cards for this incredible milestone. CPL Reid served in the U.S. Army during World War II, entering into active duty on September 26, 1944.

Born on March 1, 1948, PFC Barefield served from November 1970 to March 1972. PFC Barefield received the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.  PFC Barefield is not expected to have any next-of-kin attend his burial.

He was shot down by enemy fighters during a large bombing mission near Leipzig, Germany in May 1944.
