2020 TREASURES OF THE TEXAS COAST CHILDREN'S ART CONTEST
Today, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush announced that the 2020 Treasures of the Texas Coast Children's Art Contest is now open for entries. Artwork should be based on the theme “Treasures of the Texas Coast” and depict why the Texas coast is important or special to the participating student. The top 40 pieces of art will appear in a 2021 calendar which will be distributed throughout the state.“The Texas Coastline is one of the many treasures that makes our great state unique,” said Texas Land Commissioner George P.

A free “come and go” benefits fair for Texas Veterans will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2019, at the Humble Civic Center. The fair, targeting all area Veterans, military members and their families, is one of several held throughout the state in 2020.Officials from the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) will be on hand to provide information on state programs including land, home and home improvement loans, as well as Texas State Veterans Homes and Cemeteries for Veterans and military members in Texas.

Today, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced the upcoming dates and locations for a series of Public Open Houses on the Coastal Texas Study. The Coastal Texas Protection & Restoration Feasibility Study, or the Coastal Texas Study, is a comprehensive draft proposal to examine the feasibility of construction projects for coastal storm risk management and ecosystem restoration along the Texas coast.

Today, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush announced the fourth and seventh grade winners of the 2019 Save Texas History Essay Contest, sponsored by the Texas General Land Office’s Save Texas History Program. The essay contest encourages students to answer the question, “What history in your community is worth saving?”“As a former history teacher, I am proud to announce the recipients of the 2019 annual Save Texas History Essay Contest: fourth grader, George Vernau III and seventh grader Aiden Williams,” said Commissioner Bush.

Today, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) and the Alamo Mission Archaeological Advisory Committee released statements following the identification of three burials during archeological exploration of the Monks Burial Room and Nave of the Alamo Church. The purpose of archeology inside and around the Alamo Church and Long Barrack is to install moisture monitoring equipment as well as locate and document the foundations of the 300 year old structures.

Bush visited three local Houston Schools – Spillane Middle School, Highland Heights Elementary School and Lanier Middle School as part of his 'Year of Education' Initiative. These three local Houston schools made for the last three stops out of fifty of his education visits for the year. During his visit, Commissioner Bush taught an interactive Texas history lesson using reproductions of one of Stephen F. Austin’s original maps from the Texas General Land Office archives.

Yesterday, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush visited Boerne Middle School North in Boerne, Texas as part of his 'Year of Education' Initiative. During his visit, Commissioner Bush taught an interactive Texas history lesson using reproductions of one of Stephen F. Austin’s original maps from the Texas General Land Office archives. Commissioner Bush also brought a special surprise for the 7th grade class, students were given the chance to hold a cannonball fired at the Battle of the Alamo at the end of the lesson.
