Mitigation

Mitigation

In 2018, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allocated more than $4.3 billion in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation funds (CDBG-MIT) to Texas grantees. All CDBG-MIT activities must meet HUD's definition of mitigation, which is activities that increase resilience to disasters and reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of loss of life, injury, damage to and loss of property, and suffering and hardship, by lessening the impact of future disasters.

Mitigation allocations from HUD:

Disaster Year Grantee CDBG Mitigation Awards
2017 State of Texas $4,074,456,000
2016 State of Texas $169,748,000
2015 Houston, TX $61,884,000
2015 San Marcos, TX $24,012,000

On August 30, 2019, HUD published the initial Federal Register notice with rules for how grantees could use the funding. The GLO developed an action plan, which was approved by HUD on March 31, 2020. The GLO continues to administer the CDBG-MIT funding in accordance with the amended and HUD-approved state action plan.
