MCALLEN — The Alfredo Gonzales Texas State Veterans Home announced plans to celebrate Independence Day with the unveiling ceremony of an Iwo Jima Raising the Flag sculpture. This intricate piece was carved out of wood six years ago by Harry James, a 101 year-old Navy veteran, and was donated to the State Veterans Home. The hand carved figure will be displayed in a glass case in the Alfredo Gonzales Texas State Veterans Home lobby.
The unveiling ceremony will begin on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. in the Alfredo Gonzales Texas State Veterans Home. A BBQ for our Veterans will follow.
The sculpture represents our Veterans’ continued commitment to the freedom of our nation and duty to honor, even at the age of 101.
