PRESS RELEASE — Nov 03, 2023

AUSTIN — Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. announced that the Alamo Trust, Inc. will conduct an in-depth Structural Integrity Investigation of the Alamo Cenotaph beginning in early November 2023.

The Alamo Cenotaph will not be moved from its current location. This investigation will be conducted to gain valuable insights into the current condition of the structure itself. The assessments will include analysis of exterior structure, masonry ties, interior concrete, brick integrity, drainage systems, and moisture levels.

“While serving in the Texas Senate, I threw down the legal challenge that kept the Alamo Cenotaph in its place and passed the only legislation that protects our historical monuments, markers, and medallions.  I am fully committed to preserving the Alamo Cenotaph for future generations. ‘The Spirit of Sacrifice’ stands as a symbol of the legacy and bravery of the fallen heroes who gave their all on this sacred ground,” said Commissioner Buckingham. “This investigation is needed to make educated decisions to fortify the Cenotaph’s foundational integrity. The General Land Office is committed to the transparency of this investigation through open communication and public engagement throughout the entire process.”

To ensure the investigative process is transparent and allows for community engagement, the public can safely observe the investigative process firsthand through a securely fenced translucent perimeter around the Cenotaph. Additionally, work on the Cenotaph can be observed by watching the site's 24-hour live camera feed.
