Project Description
This project completed breakwater construction along the Mad Island WMA GIWW shoreline. The newly constructed breakwaters are continuous with previously build breakwaters; with this newest construction, the entirety of the WMA GIWW shoreline is now protected. Previous phases of breakwater construction for the WMA were completed in 2010 and 2018 through a partnership between TPWD, TNC, GLO, and NFWF. These previous efforts completed 2.5 miles of shoreline protection. This project completed an additional 2 miles. The breakwaters protect up to 600 acres of critical coastal habitats from future degradation and loss caused by erosion.
