AUSTIN — Today, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) joined local leaders and community members to celebrate the completion of critical infrastructure improvements at the City of Freeport Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The City of Freeport was awarded $5,991,468 by the Texas GLO through the Hurricane Harvey mitigation competition to strengthen the reliability and resilience of the wastewater system, helping protect public health and the environment while ensuring the community is better prepared for future severe weather events. The project represents a continued partnership between the City of Freeport and the Texas General Land Office to invest in infrastructure that supports long-term disaster recovery and mitigation along the Texas Gulf Coast.

"The Texas GLO is proud to partner with communities like Freeport to deliver resources to strengthen critical infrastructure and safeguard homes, businesses, and local infrastructure,” said Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. "By improving Freeport’s wastewater treatment system, local leaders can better protect residents, maintain essential services, and support economic stability during and after severe weather events. Investments like these ensure that Texas cities rebuild but are also more prepared for future storms."

Upgrades to the Freeport WWTP were funded through a Community Development Block Grant Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Texas GLO is administering more than $14 billion in disaster recovery and mitigation funding from HUD to help communities rebuild stronger and reduce the impacts of future disasters.
