A Comprehensive Development Plan to Revitalize the Beachfront, Enhance Public Access, and Encourage Ecotourism for Sargent Beach

Project Description

Sargent Beach is located in Matagorda County, approximately a two hours' drive from the Houston-Galveston metropolitan area. Sargent Beach has suffered severe erosion over the last several decades. The erosion has threatened the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway resulting in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers building an eight-mile-long granite revetment immediately landward of the beach. Construction is expected to be complete in late 1997. The county proposes to develop a long-term, comprehensive development plan for Sargent Beach to improve the public's access to the Gulf shoreline and to provide orderly and cost-effective development of the area in compliance with the Coastal Management Program goals and policies. The plan will include the proposed use of the Corps' mooring and staging facilities as park areas.
